QT Gold Coast Wedding Photographer | Kirk & Sarah – A Real Life Wedding Story

Back in March I had the privilege of photographing the beautiful wedding of Kirk & Sarah. It was such a beautiful day filled with so much love, emotion and beautiful friendships. It was one of the most emotional wedding ceremonies I ever photographed and such a gorgeous day. I absolutely love catching up with my couples, chatting about their day and hearing their Real Life Wedding Stories. Here is their story as told by Sarah.

The History….

How did you meet?
We first met at a fancy dress party for a mutual friend.  It was a Western theme and Kirk was dressed as a hippy with a stupidly funny long wig on.  I didn’t not like him when I first met him!  Haha!

How long did you date?
We were together just over 6 years before we got married.

How did he propose?
It was my 30th Birthday and Kirk had spent the entire day pampering me and showering me with gifts.  We had checked into the Sofitel at Broadbeach with beautiful ocean views earlier that day, and while we were at dinner that night Kirk organized the hotel to decorate our room with rose petals and there was champagne on ice when I walked in.  He got down on one knee at 9.15pm on the 14/11/14 and asked me to marry him.  It was perfect.

The Wedding….

What was your wedding date?
12th March 2016

Why did you choose this date? Any special reason?
No particular reason with this date – we wanted to wait at least year before getting married as so many friends where traveling for our wedding. We talked to hotels around what suitable dates they could arrange for us.  The QT hotel suggested March for weather purposes.

Where did you have your wedding?
QT Hotel – Gold Coast

Was there any special touches, vows, traditions or tributes that you included into your ceremony?
When we met with our celebrant we told her wanted the whole ceremony purely about us.  No reading, no poems, no quotes… we just wanted her to tell our story and we wrote our own vows in secret and only shared them with everyone on the day. She also asked us to complete a survey in secret about each other and she shared that with everyone for the first time on the day. Everyone said our ceremony was one of the most emotional and heartfelt weddings they had ever been too.

If you could pick one special moment from the day to remember what would it be?
When Kirk said his vow to me and I looked into his beautiful eyes and that one tear trickled down his cheek.  Our celebrant grabbed my handkerchief and wiped it away.  I will hold that image in my mind forever.  The love in his eyes, I’ve never seen that look before – it was magical.

The Gown….

Who designed your gown?
Alfred Angelo.

Where was it purchased?
Brides of Brisbane – Chermside.

What was your gown shopping experience like? Was this dress the first one you tried on? Did you try on hundreds, loved it, hated it?
This is a funny story.  My first fitting I tried on “the dress”.  My mum burst into tears and so did my MOH.  I looked at the price tag and said “NO WAY I can’t do that”  and I left the store.  Mum and I searched dresses on line and found one a similar style for a quarter of the price and purchased it.  It was stunning, perfect and beautifully made… 3mths later I decided it wasn’t “the one” and I went back to the store and purchased the other dress.  I had 2 wedding dresses, which was fine because I hung the wrong one in my closest and Kirk thought it was the dress that whole time. Haha fooled him.

Where there any special details you included in your day? Did you borrow a piece of jewellery etc?
My mum made a beautiful handkerchief for me and my bridesmaids which was a lovely keep sake.

Did you have any DIY elements to your day?
Yes, I made all the centerpiece numbers and placecards.  My brother’s wife Regina made my gorgeous wishing well, which was a mailbox all made from scratch by her.

If you could describe the overall theme of your wedding day what would it be?
Our theme was Romantic Elegance.  White Roses, Gold highlights and soft lavender dresses for my girls.  It was exactly as I had hoped it would be when I planned it.

Advice…

Do you have any advice for other brides?
I think my biggest piece of advice is to have a long engagement.  Our engagement was 16mth before marriage and it gave us time to plan everything and look at different options and ideas before committing to anything for fear of ‘time restraints’.  Vendors love it when you give them plenty of notice, and it also helped me to keep a spreadsheet of expenses to keep the costs down.  You might think you want those rose petals sprinkled over the aisle, but when the quote comes back and it says “$150 Rose petals” you might re-think the importance of things like that.  Also, we put our money into our photographer, video photographer & drinks!  I cut back on decorations, the cake & things like wedding favours.  No one really cares that much about the $1000 centerpiece that is blocking their view of the bride and groom the whole night.

What made your wedding day so memorable?
When we sat down to plan the wedding, we both agreed to us it was important that this is just one big party with all our close friends and that’s exactly what it was.  Everyone was dancing, people were commenting how much fun it was and that it really was ‘US’.

What was the funniest memory from your wedding day?
The highlight and every person will remember this… at the end of the night the band played “Time of your life” and Kirk’s dad did the “Baby jump” from the movie Dirty Dancing and the boys held him up over their heads and were walking him around on the dance floor.  Someone filmed it and captioned “No one puts Dad in the corner”  Still makes me laugh.

What was the weather and location like on the day?
It was amazing – we had perfect weather and as we were coming back from our beach photo shoot it started raining & we saw a rainbow!

If there was one thing that you would change from the day, what would it be and why?
I wouldn’t change a thing – everything was perfect.

Where did you go on your honeymoon?
Hayman Island – who says you need to go overseas?  We have the most beautiful Islands in the world only 1hr flight away!
