One of the most common questions I am asked is “Where should I have my family portraits taken?” and there are so many answers to this question. Family portraits can be taken anywhere in good light! They can be a crappy brick wall, a gorgeous garden, a scrubby park down the road or even the beach. It really just comes down to the look you are after and if you wanted to include a location that means something to you.
To help you decide however, I wanted to put together this little blog post with a few location ideas in and around Brisbane and Ipswich.
The Studio – At Annerley
The studio is a gorgeous natural light filled space which can be used at any time during the day (daylight hours) and even in bad weather. If you like the simplicity of a white or black background so it is all about the people in the photographs, then the studio is for you!
There are so many different outdoor locations available. Most of these are limited to the first three hours after sunrise or the last three hours before sunset. This is to make sure we have that beautiful flattering light we all love. Secondly outdoor locations are totally weather dependant, so we need to be mindful of rain and storms and be ok with rescheduling if the weather is not great. However, outdoors especially in a location that means something to you can give you so many beautiful photographs. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about the type of location you would love.
Gardens & Greenery
For beautiful gardens & greenery here are some beautiful locations:
(L-R) Sherwood Arboretum, New Farm Park, Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens
(L-R) Robelle Domain in Springfield, Kholo Botanical Gardens & Queens Park in Ipswich.
There is even a park down the road from the studio that can look absolutely stunning in photos!!
Sometimes even your backyard (or front) can be a beautiful location for photos.
As we are so close to both the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, if you love heading to the beach and love the look and feel of beach portraits, then there are some gorgeous spots perfect for family portraits.. (L-R) Tallebudgera Creek, Burleigh Heads, Wynnum, Caloundra, Currumbin and Southport Spit.
And all of these different beachy looks were taken down at Southport Spit.. so much variety in such a small area. One of my absolute favourite beachy spots!
That Country Paddock Feel
There are quite a few hidden gems in and around Brisbane and Ipswich that have that country feel to them.. (L-R) A paddock out Laidley way, a secret spot in Kholo, Robelle Domain in Springfield, Boondal Wetlands and Hardings Paddock all have that country, long grass feel and would be perfect for family photos.
The Urban Feel
There are so many great spots in and around Brisbane for that Urban Feel – West End for example on a Sunday afternoon is an Urban Oasis and not many people around. Here are some other great examples.. The top shot is from the Sherwood Arboretum all within a 5m radius..
And some more Urban Feels.. (L-R) Powerhouse, Out the Back of the Studio, Powerhouse, Near the Studio and a Park In East Brisbane.
For some more brick feels good old Teneriffe has a collection of old buildings and beautiful brick walls.. followed by down stairs at the studio.
And if you like the idea of a location that has a bit of an urban feel as well as a mixture of other looks then here are a few (L-R) Under the Storey Bridge, Wellington Point and the Kangaroo Point cliffs.
So there are a few different locations that can help get the brainstorming juices flowing! Any great photographer can make any location work, you just have to see beyond the rubbish, toilet block or main road!
