Brisbane Personal Branding Photographer | Kit’s Experience

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Kit from Ruby & Press for a Personal Branding session. I love sending my clients an email asking about their experience and any advice they have as a small business owner to anyone reading my blog. So here is Kit’s experience! Enjoy!

About Your Business

1. What is the name of your business and tell me a little bit about who you are and what you offer your clients?
Ruby & Pearl Press is my range of paper goods, stationery, and gift ware. I’m a freelance graphic designer who is addicted to lettering and bright colours, and I create these designs to make your home beautiful and your heart happy!

People especially love my quirky (sometimes brutally honest) greeting cards.

2. Why did you go into business for yourself? How did it all come about?
I’d already been dabbling in lettering as a side-hustle while working a full time (soul sucking) office job. It came about that I was let go from that job… and it was the perfect opportunity to upskill / change careers with some graphic design study! I’ve absolutely loved the change, and working for myself has been fantastic. I’m a great boss.

3. What do you love about what you do now?
I love creating designs with funny words or inspirational quotes that make people smile. I get such lovely feedback from my customers of cards cheering up people in hospital, people commenting on the positive words around their home, or their new pencil case making their desk job a bit more bearable. It’s such a great feeling to give that bit of happiness to people!

4. What is the best thing about running your own business?
I’ve had a major decrease in anxiety (I wasn’t kidding about the soul sucking at my old desk job!) and have been able to dedicate much more time to eating healthy + exercising … And binge-watching a few TV series.

I still usually work 8+ hours a day, but I enjoy being in control of my timetable and knowing I can take a break when I need to. It’s also really satisfying when you hit a new milestone or get a big success, because you have 100% ownership of it!

5. What is the hardest thing about running your own business?
Answering the question, “So what do you do?” … Because no one REALLY wants to hear about how I spent the day planning my new Pinterest marketing strategy.

It can get lonely (although I’m an introvert and most of the time I really enjoy working by myself). Thankfully there are some amazing online and local communities for small business owners that are full of like minded people who want to network and just chat about entrepreneur life.

6. If you could offer one piece of advice to a fellow business owner what would it be?
Just start. Keep moving forward. You will never feel 100% in control and ready for the next step, and you often have to just leap in and figure it out. There’s no shame in making mistakes, we’re all learning as we go.

Also, never underestimate the power of being kind. To everyone. It’s amazing how many doors it will open for you.

7. Who is your biggest business inspiration? Who do you follow or look up to either in person or online?
There are so many. My lettering idols include Jessica Hische, Katie Daisy, Lily & Val, and CatCoq.

From a business perspective, I really look up to Emily McDowell and also the ladies from Think Creative Collective (I should plug their podcast, The Strategy Hour. Look it up on iTunes, it’s SO useful for business owners!)

8. Everybody has flat or uninspired days… tell me what you do to overcome these and shift your energy?
My first priority is to just get out of the house. Some fresh air and a new environment usually sets me straight, especially if I’ve got a book to read. I get REALLY into reading, it’s a great distraction from reality for my brain and gets the imagination firing. Sometimes I just have to give myself permission to take a whole day / morning / afternoon off. 100% guilt free.

9. What is the most courageous thing you have done in business?
Earlier this year I wrote a list of businesses I’d like to collaborate with (plenty of them have a following 10 x mine!) … I started contacting them with collaboration ideas and have been so surprised at how many were happy to work with me! It’s been a really great experience and I look forward to continuing it.

10. What is one quote that you live by?
“Anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” – J K Rowling

and also, “I can do anything, but not everything.”

About the Experience

1. Why did you book a personal branding session with Nicole Barralet Photography?

Because I trust Nicole 100% to get the best photos of me and make sure I’m doing the right poses! I also just love the natural light in her studio, it looks so lovely in photos.

2. What does the term personal branding mean to you?

Getting photos that are the first impression of your business. In such an online world, it’s important to convey the essence of me and my brand to my customers and followers.

I want them to look at these photos and feel like they know what I’m about.

3. How did you find the experience of being photographed by Nicole?

Loved it! Nicole’s great at making the experience fun and giving you total confidence that you look great. I really appreciated that she asked questions about my business and the vibe I was going for beforehand, and the photos really reflected that.

4. Were you happy with the final collection of photographs?

Absolutely ecstatic with them 😀

Nicole totally nailed the feeling of my business in these photos. When so much of my business is digital, it’s invaluable to have images that reflect me and my business. I need my customers to see these photos and feel like they’re getting to know me, and that’s exactly what I got! Nicole also did a great job creating a relaxed, fun atmosphere. I had total confidence that I would look great in the photos, because I know Nicole is used to working with all kinds of body types!

I would absolutely recommend getting your personal branding done with Nicole, it’s worth the investment.
