Wow! What a crazy few weeks it has been. The last week I have been without internet access so I am trying really hard to catch up on all of my blogging. As well as photographing three amazing shoots in the last week, I also attended an amazing photography forum called Hair of the Dog. It was a three day photography convention run by the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) featuring some of the best photographers both from here and overseas. With all the chaos in planning a wedding and with the ongoing dramas with recovering from the floods, the Hair of the Dog came at a really good time for me. I need some inspiration! After listening to a variety of speakers over the three days and visiting the trade show put on by the event sponsors, I came away with new friends and a fresh perspective on my photography. Here are a few highlights from some of the speakers I saw.
Wow! What an amazing speaker. I was introduced to Jasmine’s blog a couple of years back and have been following it ever since. She has an amazing brand, an amazing blog (seriously if you need a good read, check out her blog) and takes some really awesome fashion inspired wedding images. Jasmine spoke about her photography journey, how she started out and gave some really good advice to us about what sets us apart from other photographers “YOU!”. Most photographers can take great photographs, but people choose photographers because of who they are as people. This is something that really resonated with me and has set me thinking about how I can better represent my photography online to reflect who I am as a person. While my internet has been down, I have been working on this and over the next few months I will be working hard refining my brand and showing more of who I am. I can’t wait!!! This post is one of the first posts I will be doing in a series of showing more about who I am and my journey as a photographer and a small business owner.
Sue is an amazing photographer who specializes in “Portrait Couture“. She has taken ‘glamour’ to a whole new level and I really want to be photographed by her!!! She is A-MAZING!! Sue talked a lot about how she started her business, how keeping it simple has worked for her and talked about having confidence in yourself and charging what you are worth (Whatever that may be). I attended a one day seminar with Sue last year and it was great to have a refresher and be inspired to achieve the goals I want to achieve! I just love looking at her work. She truly is a genius in bringing the best out in a person. So gorgeous!!
Matt & Katie
Matt and Katie are wedding photographers from Toowoomba. They were the last speaker of the 3 day conference and one of the most powerful speakers. I know everyone sitting in the room listening to them could identify with what they were saying. As photographers sometimes we get so caught up in photography and our business that we forget about what is important in life – the people we love, our family and our friends. It really put things into perspective for me and I really want to achieve a happy work life balance so that I can be there for my soon to be husband (only 4 weeks away now!!!), my family and my closest friends!!
As well as listening to all of the other fantastic speakers we saw, the one thing that I realized was that I haven’t been photographing anything for myself. You know as in just shooting for the love of it. I realized that everything that I was doing was just for the business. So one of the “resolutions” I have given myself is to start shooting more for myself. Just of things that I see, and just for the hell of it. I don’t have my SLR on hand all the time, but I always have my iPhone, so I have started documenting the world around me via hipstamatic (this awesome app for the iPhone).. Every now and again, I will upload some of them to the blog to showcase the interesting things I have been doing and have seen.
Live. Laugh. Love. Create.
