Brisbane Wedding Photographer | Our Top 3 Tips on Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer For You

Today I wanted to share my top 3 tips on how to choose the right wedding photographer for you in the video below.

Here is an overview of what I mention in the video.

1. Personality

The first thing that I believe is super important when choosing the right wedding photographer for you is, choosing a photographer who’s personality you like. As you will be spending a majority of the day (or in some cases the entire day) with your wedding photographer, it is essential that you get along with them.

Does their personality match yours?

Will they bring a fun happy vibe to the day, or will they be more quiet and blend in to the back ground?

Every couple will have different requirements for the type of wedding photographer personality they want. You need to like them!

Not every photographer will be the perfect fit for you, so we would recommend meeting with a couple of photographers in person to see who is the perfect fit for you.

2. Portfolio

The second most important aspect of choosing a wedding photographer is viewing their body work. Each photographer has a unique vision in how they see and photograph weddings.

What type of imagery appeals to you?

Do you like dark and moody imagery or light and airy?

Do you want the photos to be overall posed or completely documentary where you don’t even know the photographer is there?

Do you like the look and feel of the photographs?

How do the photographs make you feel when you look at them – do you feel uncomfortable or do you feel warm and fuzzy?

As well as looking at individual photographs from different weddings, it is also important to look at a few slideshows showcasing 100-200 photographs from the one wedding.

Does the photographer provide consistent coverage throughout the day?

Are they consistent in how their work is captured from one wedding to another?

There are many different aspects to a wedding day and you want to ensure that your photographer can handle each and every aspect.

3. Budget & Package

The dreaded b-word. Not everyone has an unlimited budget when planning a wedding, so it is important to consider how much a professional photographer will cost.

Generally between $3000-$5000 is a good amount to allocate towards photography.

Our advice would be to prioritize your photography within your budget and allocate as much as you can.

Your photographs are the one thing that you will have to remember your day after all the food has been eaten, the wine has been drunk and the flowers have gone.

So there you have it, my three tips for choosing the right photographer. But as a bonus for this blog post, I thought I would share two more pieces of advice and something for you to think about… client experience and photographer’s experience.

Client Experience

What type of a customer service experience will you get from your photographer? Are they prompt at returning your phone calls or emails, have they talked to you about turn around times? Do they listen to your needs, choices and get excited when you talk about your wedding?

Will you receive a sneak peek straight away or will you have to wait for months to see any photographs. As you are investing a substantial amount of money into your photographer you want to ensure you have a good customer service experience. Ask your photographer what their processes are, ask past clients or people who have recommended a photographer, read reviews and testimonials. This will give you a good feel for the experience you will receive.

Photographer’s Experience

There are many variables that occur on a wedding day so it is important that your photographer can handle a variety of situations. Has your photographer photographed in a variety of weather conditions – rain, hail or shine? Can your photographer handle different lighting conditions such as super bright or super dark? How do they work with people?

There are lots of different personalities that a photographer comes across on a wedding day and they need to be able to manage. All of these skills as well as being technically pro client with their camera is important part of their experience.

I hope you enjoyed our video this week and our advice on choosing the right wedding photographer for you. I hope it helps you make the right decision.
